My Creative Process

A rough pencil sketch starts the process of any art piece.

A collection of photos on my iPad and a stack of books are my references to real natural elements.

I search for several perspectives of each blossom - aerial and side view - to capture how each portion would naturally fit together.

The fine lines are added with an archival pen, and the image on the page is in the messy middle!

It provides a view into the potential of the piece if one can envision it. 

Once the details are added,
I can see the bend in the petal or the way the light reflects off the leaves.

The piece awakens with life! I find the pockets to add another stem or blossom, as if I was creating the bouquet at my table.

With custom work,
the symbolism always leads the creative process.

The botanical elements are chosen to hold the meaning and message of the client. We work together to weave their story into each and every item that is drawn.

Note: When it's my own heart leading the way, I like to save the research for the end. It always surprises me what I am drawn to and why the botanical is the focal element at the time. I usually find that the message mirrors the lessons that I am learning during the current season of life.
