Floriography: October
While I adore the florals in full bloom during the spring and summer months, there is something truly incredible about the resiliency of the blooms emerging in the early fall.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Marigold or Calendula is one of the birth flowers for the month of October. It represents grief, sorrow and warm undying love. Known for their medicinal properties, they are often considered magical. They were believed to relieve the hiccups and cure those who were struck by lightning.
While marigolds may remind you of the coming of Halloween and Thanksgiving, they hold cultural and religious significance in celebrations such as Diwali (The Festival of Lights) and Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During Dia de los Muertos, the marigold is said to attract the souls of the dead. They adorn private altars to honor the memories of those who have passed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Large quantities of marigolds are grown in India and used in the decorations of weddings, festivals and religious ceremonies. They are often seen hanging among lanterns and lights during the celebration of Diwali.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each time I see a marigold, I am now reminded of it's significance around the world. Now that is truly magical!
